Steps to prepare for mass deportations
Hello everyone,
If you’re undocumented, an immigrant, child of immigrants, or have permanent residents in your family — I want to share a few of the things I have been thinking of in preparation for as we figure out just how bad mass deportations will be. Some will think I’m overreacting and that’s okay. This is not for you. However, I have read quite a bit about Mexican reparation — so I’m committed to being prepared and choice-ful.
So first — if you have property in your family — I recommend putting things in a trust with you and a trusted loved one as trustees. During repatriation there was a lot of state seizure of property. Fucked up as it is, a company will have more rights than we do in worst case scenarios.
So putting your house or your parents house in a trust means you can own it abroad. Second, have a go-bag ready. A bag with just enough clothes that you can run if you need to quickly.
Third, have some portable stash of food you can pick up and take.
Four, pick the signs you will follow as a family to leave, in this moment. When you can’t justify away a variety of things. Have a conversation about what is enough to know you have to go. It’s pretty clear to me that mass deportations could turn into labor camps pretty easily.
Discuss your approach with your elders now so you don’t waste critical time fighting about leaving or staying.
Know now, who you would hide and where you would hide them. Have conversations with those people. Discuss safe words.
Have evacuation plans. Where are you going? What direction. How can you go to that place in multiple ways.
Can you afford to set aside money in a safe? Set aside cash in a safe.
The most likely path to mass deportation is the deployment of federal funds for incentives — getting people to narc by providing financial rewards or by keeping funds from the police to incentivize police stations to support.
Plan for that. Create relationship with neighbors and social ties that bind. How would you react as a community. Make a plan.
Most of the people I’ve talked to think there is no way it gets that bad and I swear to you reading about Mexican reparation will absolve you of that and make you want a plan.
